Postal Codes

Countries that do not use postal codes

Not every country uses postal codes. In 61 of them there is simply no code to look up — mail is sorted by town and district name instead. If a form is demanding a postcode for one of these, it is the form that is wrong, not your address.

What to put in the box

Most international checkouts insist on a postal code regardless. The usual workarounds, none of which are official codes and none of which affect delivery:

  • Leave it blank where the form allows it.
  • Enter 00000 if it insists on digits.
  • Enter NA, or repeat the city name, if letters are accepted.

What matters far more is that the town and country are right, and that a P.O. Box number is included where the recipient has one.

24 where the sources disagree

These are listed separately and deliberately. One reference says a postal code format exists, the other says none does — so we publish no code data for them rather than pick a side. Treat any code you find elsewhere for these with suspicion, and check with the country's postal operator.
