Watch the leading zero

Some Mexico postal codes begin with a zero, such as 01000. Spreadsheets and some web forms silently drop it, turning 01000 into 1000 — which is either a different place or not a valid code at all. Format the column as text before pasting codes into a spreadsheet.

How an address is written in Mexico

This is the order Mexico's postal service expects. Square brackets mark what you replace.

[Recipient name]
[Street address]
[Neighbourhood]
[Postal code (02860)] [City], [State]
MEXICO

A postal code is required in a complete Mexico address. The postal code should be written in capital letters. The state is also required.

Look up a specific address

For the code covering one particular street or building, Mexico's postal service publishes an official finder: www.correosdemexico.gob.mx/SSLServicios/ConsultaCP/Descarga.aspx. It is authoritative and kept current, which third-party copies often are not.
