In Japan a postal code is called a 郵便番号 (yūbin bangō). You will see that term on forms and address labels.

Watch the leading zero

Some Japan postal codes begin with a zero, such as 001-0000. Spreadsheets and some web forms silently drop it, turning 001-0000 into 1-0000 — which is either a different place or not a valid code at all. Format the column as text before pasting codes into a spreadsheet.

Note the order: the postal code comes first, before the region and street — the reverse of the Western convention.

A postal code is required in a complete Japan address. The prefecture is also required.
